The Staples Jr. Singers, siblings Edward, Annie, and R.C. Brown, hail from Aberdeen, Mississippi. As kids, they traveled across the South in their family van, performing up to three shows a day. Influenced by the Civil Rights movement and poverty, they wrote music about community and social justice. Despite desegregation being on paper, they faced uncertainty and discrimination.
In 1975, at ages 14, 15, and 16, they recorded their album “When Do We Get Paid,” selling it locally. The album was reissued in 2022 by Luaka Bop, gaining global acclaim. The family, now spanning four generations of musicians, drove 17 hours to New York for three shows, moving audiences to tears.
This lead to them, for the first time, flying abroad, touring across Europe, including Le Guess Who? and WOMAD, with sold-out shows in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. In the UK, they were praised by BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles. In Dublin, their family photo adorned a giant billboard.
Admired by everyone from Four Tet to The Avalanches, they were also featured on Moor Mother’s new album and appeared in several documentaries. Their work has been exhibited at the GRAY gallery in Chicago and New York.
After their overseas adventures, they began creating new music together for the first time in 50 years, leading to the newly released album ‘Searching’. Come witness the magic of their legacy at Inkonst.
