Stand-Up 101 (Wednesdays 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)

Over the course of this class, students will work toward writing and performing an original 5-minute stand-up set. Students will begin learning basic concepts of joke writing (premise/set up/punchline). You will look to find premises in your everyday life, then work on honing your material and making it authentic and accessible to audiences. Later in the session, students will focus on creating, critiquing and workshopping their own material. The class will culminate in a class showcase performance of all-original student sets.

Prerequisites: None. No previous comedy or stand-up experience required for this class. Email [email protected] with questions.

Dates: This class runs Wednesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, starting March 26th and running for 8 weeks. A showcase will be scheduled as an additional opportunity on an evening during the week of May 18th.

Instructor: Jordan Boyd (she/her)

Jordan Boyd began her comedy journey as an improviser at VCU and transitioned into stand-up after taking a course at Coalition. Since then she continues to do both forms of comedy and utilizes the tools each one brings into her teaching. Jordan is the co-host of Coalition Theater’s monthly open mic, Champions, known for curating a line-up of regional and local comedians. She also is a producer of multiple comedy shows around Richmond, one of them being The Golden Hour, which exclusively features comedians of color. And Cozy Comedy, another show with the goal to showcase comedians of diverse backgrounds. On stage, she brings her Pisces energy and love for storytelling.

We understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise that prevent you from attending or completing your registered class.
