About this Event
Do you have a stained glass piece that needs repair? Broken glass, broken metal, or both? Do you want to tackle the repair on your own but need some guidance? Make a reservation for the Stained Glass Repair Workshop!
What to expect: This workshop is best suited for copper foiled projects. Please email photos of your broken piece to [email protected] for advisement on what we'll need to conduct your repairs. You will need to bring your project that needs repair to the workshop event and any replacement glass, lead, zinc you wish to use to replace any parts with.
Costs for the workshop:
- $25 for instruction only (Plan to bring your own tools and supplies)
- $15 for use of all tools including cutting tools, grinder, saw, soldering iron, etc.
- $15 for use of foil, solder, flux for your repairs
- Lead repairs are an additional $20 charge to cover putty, whiting, and cleanup of lead dust and residue. (Plan to bring a respirator and heavy gloves)
For broken glass, we will take a rubbing of the pieces to be replaced, remove them, recut them from your provided replacement glass, refoil them, and reinstall them.
For broken metal such as tears in the lead, foil, or solder, repairs could be quick and simple. Or they could be more involved to point of needing metals cut out and replaced.
Repair limitations:
- Broken bevels will need to be replaced, we do not have the capabilities of restoring them here. Finding the bevel can be challenging, but I have had some good luck on ebay and delphi.
- Size: we comfortably have the space in the workshop for guests to bring a project under 36" sq. We have more space but will need to limit guests if the piece is much larger.
- Extent of damage: if more than 25% of the peice is damaged, it may be worth looking into reproduction/remaking instead of repair.
- Lead Panels: Additional $20 charge. Please bring a respirator mask for yourself and a pair of heavy gloves such as leather work gloves or gardening gloves. Old leaded projects can be risky for lead exposure when we need to cut into them. Lead Off soap and wipes are available at the studio. Lead came is not available for purchase here, but Down Home Stained Glass in Anoka does carry it in 6' lengths in varying widths.
- Lampshades: Would need to view to advise. Sometimes lampshades are made with 3D forms that we would need to try to simulate to repair. Formed glass, rounded glass is not something we can reproduce here.
