✨ Op 1 augustus 2026 om 20.00 uur presenteert Red Events & Distribution Ltd met trots in de serene O.L.V-Sint-Pieterskerk in het hart van Gent, een juweel van de Belgische barokke kerk architectuur, beroemd om zijn uitstekende akoestiek, een schitterende uitvoering van het Stabat Mater van Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, uitgevoerd door het wereldwijd geprezen Belgische ensemble La Chapelle Sauvage onder leiding van Karel De Wilde, met sopraan Abigail Barker en contratenor Gleb Zakharov als solisten, beide gevestigd in London.

Geschreven in de laatste weken van Pergolesi’s korte leven en pas na zijn dood in première gebracht, wordt Stabat Mater algemeen beschouwd als een van de meest ontroerende en verfijnde meesterwerken van de barok, een compositie waarvan de emotionele kracht tijd, geloof en stijl overstijgt.

Een hymne van verdriet en hemelse schoonheid, het stuk heeft generaties componisten geïnspireerd, van Bach tot Vivaldi, en werd vertolkt door grootheden zoals Montserrat Caballé, Barbara Hendricks, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Philippe Jaroussky, Nathalie Stutzmann en Andreas Scholl, artiesten die Pergolesi’s meesterwerk wereldwijd tot grote hoogten hebben gebracht.

🎻La Chapelle Sauvage

La Chapelle Sauvage is een artistiek huis met vele kamers. Het ontstond onder impuls van de Belgische dirigent Karel De Wilde als een internationaal initiatief van jonge professionele musici komende uit geheel de wereld. Wat hen samenbracht en typeert is een wilde en ontembare muzikale ambitie met een eigentijdse, kritische en reflectieve attitude.

Karel De Wilde studeerde op jonge leeftijd piano, orgel, klavecimbel en contrabas, en vervolgens orgel, muziektheorie en orkestdirectie aan de Koninklijke Conservatoria van Gent en Mons. Reeds vroeg werden zijn veelzijdige talenten in binnen-en buitenland opgemerkt en werd hem aangeboden om deze uitermate te laten ontwikkelen. Zo werden verschillende van zijn composities succesvol internationaal gecreëerd en concerteerde hij in aanwezigheid van tal van Europese prominente persoonlijkheden. Het was Karel's arrangement van het

Belgische Volkslied dat geselecteerd en uitgevoerd werd te Brussel door het Nationaal Orkest van Kroatië in aanwezigheid van de Europese regeringsleiders op de dag van hun toetreding tot de EU. Karel wordt beschouwd als één van de meest veelbelovende dirigenten van België en is een graag geziene artistieke partner van talrijke artiesten en culturele organisaties. Hiervan getuigen de succesvolle samenwerkingen met La Chapelle Sauvage, Red Events, An Pierlé, Podium Nieuw Talent, Davidsfonds, Beauraing Festival of Sacred Music, Festival van Vlaanderen en vele anderen.

Niettegenstaande hun vaste kern modificeert hun bezetting zich gedurig naargelang het repertoire, dat een grote verscheidenheid aan kamermuziek bevat evenals werken voor symfonisch orkest en regelmatig samenwerkt met koren en internationale solisten. Hierbij steeds opzoek naar een creatieve en authentiek verantwoorde uitvoering, gebruik makende van de kennis en modernste technieken waarover we heden ten dage beschikken.

Gleb Zakharov (contratenor)

Gleb Zakharov is een in Londen gevestigde countertenor die momenteel zijn artistieke ontwikkeling voortzet aan de Royal Academy of Music. Daar studeert hij bij Marcus van den Akker en Raymond Connell en wordt hij daarnaast begeleid door zijn langdurige mentor, Patricia Rozario OBE.

Gleb heeft zijn artistieke ontwikkeling verder verdiept door te studeren bij professor Faltin aan de Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin en masterclasses te volgen bij Sonia Prina, Carmen Santoro, Ailish Tynan, Ashley Stafford en andere vooraanstaande zangers en coaches.

Tot zijn recente en toekomstige operarollen behoren Pisandro in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria en de titelrol in Händels Giulio Cesare in Egitto, die hij in de zomer van 2026 in Triëst zal vertolken. Hij treedt regelmatig op in concerten en operaproducties door heel Europa en gaf onlangs een reeks uitvoeringen van Stabat Mater in vijf verschillende landen.

Zijn repertoire bestrijkt een breed muzikaal spectrum, van barok en romantiek tot hedendaagse muziek. Als concertzanger trad hij op in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Zwitserland, Nederland, België, Duitsland en Italië.

Met zijn warme, donkere timbre en zijn natuurlijke gevoeligheid voor geestelijk repertoire brengt Gleb een grote emotionele diepgang in Stabat Mater. Zijn interpretatie blijft trouw aan Pergolesi’s oorspronkelijke bedoeling: het verklanken van menselijke kwetsbaarheid, tederheid en innerlijke devotie.

Abigail Barker (sopraan)

Abigail Barker, een 24-jarige sopraan uit Nottingham, behaalde onlangs haar Bachelor of Music in Vocal Studies met eervolle vermelding (first-class honours) aan het Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Momenteel verrijkt ze haar zangstudie bij Marcus van den Akker en Raymond Connell, voorafgaand aan haar masteropleiding aan de Royal Academy of Music vanaf september 2026.

Abigail heeft veelvuldig opgetreden in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de rest van Europa. Recente hoogtepunten zijn onder meer een tournee met Pergolesi's Stabat Mater langs diverse prestigieuze concertlocaties, waaronder Southwark Cathedral en Queens Hall Edinburgh. Daarnaast trad zij op tijdens The Lord of the Rings in Concert in St George's Hall in Liverpool. Samen met Gleb maakte zij een concerttournee door België, Zwitserland en Nederland, waar zij in hun recital de bijzondere wisselwerking tussen de sopraan- en countertenorstem centraal stelden. Deze zomer zong zij bij Opéra de Baugé, waar zij te horen was in de koren van Don Giovanni en Der Rosenkavalier, en Minerva vertolkte in Orphée aux Enfers. Bij Trinity Laban zong zij de rol van Prima Nereidi in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.

Als regelmatige deelnemer aan concoursen werd Abigail halvefinalist van de Leach Vocal Competition en nam zij deel aan de Eastbourne International Singing Competition. Zij won de Trinity Laban English Song Prize, was finaliste in de Lilian Ash French Song Competition en de Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Competition, won de Liz Chant Bursary in Nottingham en werd geselecteerd voor de Kathleen Ferrier Bursary Competition.

Abigail heeft gezongen bij het Old Royal Naval College Chapel Choir onder leiding van Ralph Allwood, met optredens op BBC Songs of Praise, evenals bij het Rodolfus Choir, met wie zij Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem uitvoerde in de Royal Festival Hall. Written in the final weeks of Pergolesi’s life and premiered after his death, Stabat Mater has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful works of the Baroque era — a piece whose emotional radiance transcends time, faith, and genre.

A hymn of sorrow and celestial beauty, it has inspired composers from Bach to Vivaldi, and performers from Montserrat Caballé and Barbara Hendricks to other legendary interpreters as Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Philippe Jaroussky, Nathalie Stutzmann, and Andreas Scholl — artists whose performances over the past century have elevated Pergolesi’s masterpiece to the highest international acclaim.

This unique concert offers a rare opportunity to experience three sections of Pergolesi’s masterpiece exactly as it would have sounded in his own time — performed in the authentic church, in lower, warmer tuning which lends the music a darker, more velvety colour.

La Chapelle Sauvage is an artistic house with many rooms. It saw light by the impulse of the Belgian conductor Karel De Wilde as a teamwise and international initiative of young professional musicians coming from all over the world. What gathered them is a wild and untameable musical ambition with a contemporary, critical and reflective attitude.

Karel De Wilde is a versatile artist. He studied piano, organ, harpsichord and double bass at a young age, and then organ, music theory and orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatories of Ghent and Mons. His compositions were successfully created internationally and he performed in the presence of many prominent European personalities. It was Karel's arrangement of the Belgian National Anthem that was selected and performed in Brussels by the National Orchestra of Croatia in the presence of the European heads of government on the day of their accession to the EU. Karel is regarded as one of Belgium's most promising new conductors and is a welcome artistic partner of numerous artists and cultural organisations. This is evidenced by the successful collaborations with La Chapelle Sauvage, Red Events, An Pierlé, Podium Nieuw Talent, Davidsfonds, Beauraing Festival of Sacred Music, Festival van Vlaanderen, Rusanda Panfili and many others.

In addition to a large classical repertoire, La Chapelle Sauvage gladly ventures into various projects in multiple styles. Gleb Zakharov (countertenor)

Gleb Zakharov is a London-based countertenor currently continuing his artistic development at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he works with Marcus van den Akker and Raymond Connell, alongside his long-standing mentor Patricia Rozario, OBE.

Gleb has further refined his artistry through studies with Professor Faltin at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin and through masterclasses with Sonia Prina, Carmen Santoro, Ailish Tynan, Ashley Stafford, and other leading artists and coaches.

His recent and upcoming operatic roles include Pisandro in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which he will perform in Trieste in the summer of 2026. He regularly appears in concerts and productions across Europe and recently performed a series of Stabat Mater concerts in five different countries.

Gleb performs a wide range of repertoire spanning Baroque, Romantic, and contemporary music. His concert appearances have taken him throughout the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Italy.

With his warm, dark timbre and instinctive sensitivity to sacred repertoire, Gleb brings profound emotional depth to Stabat Mater, staying true to Pergolesi’s original intention to express raw human suffering, tenderness, and devotion through music.

Beyond the stage, Gleb maintains a strong digital presence with over 50k followers on Instagram, where he collaborates with major cultural institutions and brands, including Decca Classics and Medici TV, creating engaging educational content that introduces classical music and opera to new audiences.

Abigail Barker (soprano)

Abigail Barker, a 24-year-old soprano from Nottingham, recently graduated with first-class honours in Vocal Studies (BMus) from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She is currently enriching her vocal study with Marcus van den Akker and Raymond Connell, ahead of commencing her studies at Masters Level at the Royal Academy of Music in September.

Abigail has performed widely across the UK and Europe. Recent highlights include touring Pergolesi's Stabat Mater across various prestigious venues, including Southwark Cathedral and Queens Hall Edinburgh. She has also sang for Lord of the Rings in Concert at St George’s Hall, Liverpool, and toured Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands alongside Gleb, exploring connection in recital between the Soprano and Countertenor voices. She spent the summer with Opera de Bauge, appearing in the choruses of 'Don Giovanni' and 'Der Rosenkavalier', and singing Minerva in 'Orpheus in the Underworld'. At Trinity Laban, she performed as Prima Nereidi in Monteverdi's 'Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria'.

As a frequent competitor, Abigail was a semi-finalist in the Leach Vocal Competition and took part in the Eastbourne International Singing Competition. She won the Trinity Laban English Song prize, was a finalist in the Lilian Ash French Song and Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Competitions, won the Nottingham-based Liz Chant Bursary, and was selected for the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary Competition.

La Chapelle Sauvage est une maison artistique aux multiples facettes. Elle est née de l’impulsion du chef d’orchestre belge Karel De Wilde, comme une initiative collective et internationale réunissant de jeunes musiciens professionnels venus du monde entier. Ce qui les rassemble, c’est une ambition musicale libre et indomptable, portée par une approche contemporaine, critique et réfléchie.

Karel De Wilde est un artiste aux multiples talents. Dès son plus jeune âge, il étudie le piano, l’orgue, le clavecin et la contrebasse, avant de poursuivre des études d’orgue, de théorie musicale et de direction d’orchestre aux Conservatoires royaux de Gand et de Mons. Ses compositions ont été créées avec succès sur la scène internationale, et il s’est produit en présence de nombreuses personnalités européennes de premier plan. C’est son arrangement de l’hymne national belge qui a été choisi et interprété à Bruxelles par l’Orchestre national de Croatie, en présence des chefs de gouvernement européens, lors de l’adhésion de la Croatie à l’Union européenne. Karel est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des chefs d’orchestre les plus prometteurs de sa génération en Belgique et collabore régulièrement avec de nombreux artistes et institutions culturelles. En témoignent ses partenariats fructueux avec La Chapelle Sauvage, Red Events, An Pierlé, Podium Nieuw Talent, Davidsfonds, le Festival de Musique Sacrée de Beauraing, le Festival van Vlaanderen, Rusanda Panfili et bien d’autres encore.

Gleb Zakharov (contre-ténor)

Gleb Zakharov est un contre-ténor basé à Londres qui poursuit actuellement son développement artistique à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres, où il travaille avec Marcus van den Akker et Raymond Connell, aux côtés de sa mentore de longue date, Patricia Rozario, OBE.

Il a également approfondi sa formation artistique en étudiant auprès du professeur Faltin à la Hanns Eisler Hochschule de Berlin et en participant à des masterclasses dirigées par Sonia Prina, Carmen Santoro, Ailish Tynan, Ashley Stafford ainsi que d'autres artistes et pédagogues de renom.

Elle a également été membre du Rodolfus Choir, avec lequel elle a eu l’occasion d’interpréter Ein Deutsches Requiem de Brahms au Royal Festival Hall de Londres. Elle a également perfectionné son art lors de masterclasses dirigées par Ailish Tynan, Pascal Rogé, Janis Kelly, Catherine Wyn-Rogers et Lynne Dawson.
