We celebrate the 30th anniversary of the St. Cecilia’s Day Concert at the Cathedral of the Madeleine with music of two masters representing the early and late classical periods: Mozart and Beethoven. The hymn Te Deum (We Praise Thee, O God), set to music by a thirteen-years-old Mozart in 1769, is an impressive display of the young composer’s contrapuntal mastery. Beethoven’s Mass in C was commissioned by Prince Esterházy to celebrate the birthday of his wife, Princess Maria Josepha Esterházy. Although the premiere was a flop, with revisions and the passing of time, the Mass in C is now recognized as an early masterpiece amongst Beethoven’s output of sacred music. Beethoven’s Elegischer Gesang (Elegiac Song) marks a more solemn occasion: written in 1814, the Song is a tribute to the memory of Beethoven’s friend Elenore, who died in childbirth three years before. Mozart, Te Deum, KV 141/66b
Beethoven, Elegischer Gesang, Op. 118
Beethoven, Mass in C Major, Op. 86
