St Andrews Chorus returns to Caird Hall for its fifth visit, with the River Tay Sinfonia and soloists Stephen Chaundy (tenor) and Jonathan May (bass-baritone); presenting a programme of choral masterpieces by composers better known for their operas.
Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor was composed for a ceremony organised after Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo to commemorate the deaths of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette; it was one of the most popular choral works of the nineteenth century, performed at the funeral of Beethoven, whose Coriolan overture begins this concert.
Puccini’s exuberant Messa di Gloria, meanwhile, includes melodies that he later reworked in the operas Edgar and Manon Lescaut.
