The Turn of the Screw is Britten’s final Chamber Opera, written in only four months and premiered in September 1954. It is based on Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw which concerns a young inexperienced governess sent to a country house to care for two children who she is gradually convinced have been corrupted by the ghosts of a previous manservant and governess. The drama grows increasingly tense with a tragic outcome. Beneath the stylistic veneer of a victorian ghost story, the work contains many themes explored by Britten through his operas: the loss of youth and innocence and the ensuing gradual psychological deterioration of the characters are at the heart of this work. In this production we aim to further explore these themes and lean into the ambivalence set in place by Britten and Myfanwy Piper.
Conducted by Jane Hammond and directed by Doraly Gill, some of Cambridge University's finest singers and instrumentalists come together for two performances of this incredible work.
