This year marks the 50th anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the most legendary shipwreck on the Great Lakes. In remembrance of the vessel and her 29 crew members, join us for a commemorative luncheon that will bring together food, history, and reflection on this enduring maritime tragedy.The event will feature a historically accurate, chef-prepared meal taken directly from the Edmund Fitzgerald’s own galley menu, offering a rare opportunity to experience the flavors of daily life aboard the storied freighter. The meal will be accompanied by a video presentation from Ship-to-Shore Chef Catherine Schmuck, who has researched and recreated dishes from Great Lakes vessels.
The centerpiece of the luncheon will be the premiere of a new film created by the Detroit Historical Society, featuring Curator Emeritus Joel Stone in conversation with Edmund Fitzgerald experts from across the Great Lakes. Together, these voices provide new insights into the ship’s history, its final voyage, and its lasting place in maritime lore.
