About this Event
Welcome to Squishface Summer Workshop Day!
Bolster your skills and liven up your school holidays at Squishface Comic Studio with a morning of workshops, art and comics chat for the whole family! Meet and pick the brains of three talented Victorian artists in three sessions about drawing and comics making.
Each workshop runs 50 mins and is suitable for adults, teens and children 8 and up. We’ll supply basic paper and pencils, but people are welcome to bring supplies they prefer to draw with. Coffee and teamaking facilities available.
Workshops $30 each.
Come to all three workshops for $75, OR bring two people with you to ONE workshop for $75!
9:30am: Drawing Dynamic Characters with Sarah Howell
Sarah is a cartoonist, educator and a founding member of Squishface Studio. She self-publishes zines and mini-comics, was director of the Homecooked Comics Festival and now runs the Emerald Hill Comics Festival in South Melbourne. She has worked as a cartooning/graphic novels tutor at Box Hill Community Arts Centre and the Centre for Adult Education in Melbourne.
Let’s turn stiff figure drawings into characters that have charm and life. We will look at negative space, silhouette, clothing, props and foreshortening. We won’t worry too much about realistic anatomy.
10:30am: Drawing Games with Lily Mae Martin
Lily is a visual artist born in Naarm/Melbourne. Lily Mae is passionate about drawing, especially in ink. She likes to draw complex landscapes, realistic figures but also sketching everyday things such as her shoes and her lunch. She graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Art.
This drawing workshop will include different drawing exercises that are helpful for warming up, and a round or two of Exquisite Corpse.
11:30am: Funhouse Mirror with Ariel Slamet Ries
Ariel is a Naarm-based, Ignatz award-winning cartoonist and author of the comics Witchy, Cry Wolf Girl, and the upcoming graphic novel Strange Bedfellows. They’re interested in using a fantastical lens to examine the mundane, and curating empathy for flawed characters. They’d also like to have a dog someday.
Reimagine a moment from your life…with a twist! What if your doctor was a wild beast? What if that trip to the shops happened in a horror movie? Grab your pens and paper, and discover the power of the image in comics.
