About this Event
Guild (n): a group of people who come together in pursuit of a common interest
Sprout’s Guild is a program for learners ages 6-12 to join forces in their pursuit of knowledge. Together we will learn about ourselves, the world around us, and our place in it. We will discover the natural world, our language, and people who have come before us. We support one another, persevere through difficulties, and grow every day. Students may register for one or multiple subjects.
This program is best for ages 6-12, but students younger or older may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for more information.
10:00-11:00 Science (Sky, Atmosphere, and Weather)
This science class incorporates hands-on exploration and experiments, nature study, and the arts to help students deepen their understanding of the world around them. This quarter, students will explore the sky and weather, learning about clouds, rain, the water cycle, and more. Students will practice scientific skills like making observations, recording data, and analyzing patterns.
11:00-12:00 History (The Beginning of Time)
We're going WAY BACK! Explore history from the very beginning - the start of the universe itself. Students will learn about the origins of the universe, our solar system, and planet earth, the start of life and how it changed, the dinosaurs, and early humans. Then, we'll explore the lives of those earliest humans, with the creation of writing and mathematics, agriculture and civilization. Students will visit those early civilizations to learn about life in Norte Chico, the Indus Valley, ancient Egypt, and more. (Optional activities to extend learning will be sent home.)
1:00-2:00 Reading & Language Arts
This course will build reading and writing skills for elementary students using a blend of Orton-Gillingham, Montessori, and Charlotte Mason methods.
For younger elementary: Young children will develop pre-reading and reading skills like sound blending, story sequencing, phonemic awareness, and rhyming. A multi-sensory approach builds letter recognition, letter writing, word-building. Advancing students increase their understanding of English letter teams and rules of the English language.
For older elementary: Lessons will improve reading fluency, spelling, handwriting, and grammar. Students will practice reading, build confidence in spelling by understanding the rules of language, improve handwriting, and increase their understanding of English grammar.
For both age groups, rich literature (stories and poetry) will help children develop a love of reading, build vocabulary, and expose students to wonderful ideas. Students will have recommended activities to complete at home between class meetings.
2:00-3:30 Movie Club
Enjoy crafts, games, snacks, and more based on your favorite movies! Each week will feature one character or a group of friends. This program will use favorite stories, characters, and music to develop social skills, fine and gross motor skills, and more.
Your ticket is good for one 5-week session February 4 - March 4.
