About this Event
Join us to plant 1200 bare root trees and shrubs in a new small-scale agroforestry system at the Farmstead School! This property was purchased to host a farm based middle school program, and has formed a partnership with BSOA to steward the land and open it to the wider community. This will be our first big event on site to break ground on the project. We will be planting trees and shrubs for forage, habitat, and fruit, including native and bioregional species like mulberry, three leaf sumac, golden currant, false indigo, three leaf sumac, elderberry, hazelnut, and serviceberry. These hedgerows will form the backbone of a system for grazing of goats/sheep, and eventually cultivating small scale staple crops integrated with pigs and chickens.
Please show up on time to join a 30-minute introductory session, in which we will overview the ecological benefits of hedgerows, a summary of our soil prep methods, the thought process behind species selection and placement, and a planting tutorial. You will plant with a team of 10-15 others, with multiple roles including digging holes, placing trees in the correct order, planting trees, and re-mulching. These are baby trees, so it's not too much heavy lifting! But many hands make light work. Plan to bring sturdy closed-toed shoes, layers, sun protection, water, and gardening gloves. We will have some loaner gloves if needed.
Donations to the Bindweed School of Agroecology support our continued work providing free, hands-on education in ecological farming and nutritious food to the middle school program and the wider community. Donation Link. The Joanna Macy Center for Resilience and Regeneration at Naropa is a proud sponsor of this event helping to pay the cost of planting trees.
