We're so excited to offer incredibly fun drop-in activities available at the Buttonwoods Museum from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday April 16, 2024 through Friday April 19, 2024.
The drop-in activities will consist of crafts including sewing, wampum bead bracelet making, and paper shoemaking. You and your family are warmly welcome to visit anytime from 10am to 2pm and work on whichever crafts you like at your own pace, no sign up needed.
Crafts available every day:
Sewing, knitting, and weaving - children will get to try various fabric crafts, which were one of the most common chores in a historical household.
Paper shoemaking - a simplified version of the shoemaking process here in Haverhill, using everyday materials.
Wampum bead bracelets - Wampum beads were a highly prized artform traditionally made by Algonquin peoples from quahog shells, and used to make a variety of jewelry. Learn how to use beads to make a bracelet to take home.
Dugout Canoe Carving - Dugout canoes were a common mode of transportation used by Algonquin peoples in New England. Try carving a small model of a dugout canoe out of wax to take home and see if it floats.
Each day will also have its own special supervised activity run by Buttonwoods staff or volunteers:
Tuesday 04/16: Butter churning - Use our butter churn to learn how to turn cream into butter, an important historical method for preserving dairy products.
Wednesday 04/17: Quill Pen Calligraphy - Try using a real quill pen and ink to write how people did in the past.
Thursday 04/18: Candle Making - Learn how to make a simple candle from scratch that you can take home.
Friday 04/19: Native American Archaeology - Get a chance to touch some real life Native American artifacts from our education collection that were found in Haverhill.
The cost is $10 per single child, and another $5 per child after the first. So for example a family with 3 children would cost $20. No charge for parents.
