Spring 2023 Lay Servant Training -- North Coast District

You are invited to participate in this two-day training event on Friday, March 3 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, March 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Basic Workshop will be offered in person only, and the the Advanced Class (Leading Public Prayer) will be hybrid, both onsite and via ZOOM. There will be worship and a certificate presentation session at the conclusion of Saturday's workshop. Registrants are required to attend both days to complete their respective workshop.

Both Basic and Advanced training sessions are available.

• The Basic Course offering is: "Lay Servant Ministries" and is intended for those new to Lay Servant Training or have not taken a course in 3 years or more. This course is the foundation course and allows you to take other courses to becoming a Certified Lay Servant, Certified Lay Speaker, or Certified Lay Minister. However, ANYONE can take the course. You do not have to be in the process of being certified. The Basic Course encourages participants to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of servant leadership. The book we will be using is Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course Participant's Book by Sandy Jackson with Brian Jackson. *The book can be found to order either at Cokesbury or Christian Book. Rev. Daniel Drew and Ed Fair, CLM, will lead this session which will only be offered in person.

• There is also one Advanced Course available: Leading Public Prayer: Let the Whole Church Say, Amen! This is intended for those who have taken a Basic Course in the last 3 years and are active as a Lay Servant. Prayer is something we learn; it is something that can be taught. For many, however, the only teaching about prayer they ever receive is modeled in Sunday worship. This course may challenge some of your assumptions, test some of your preconceived ideas, stretch your thinking, and enrich your prayer life. It will, at the very least, present you with an opportunity to grow in the discipline of leading public prayer. *The book we will be using is Let the Whole Church Say, Amen! by Laurence Hull Stookey --- which can be found either at Cokesbury or Christian Book. This course will be hybrid — ZOOM and in person at Garfield Heights UMC simultaneously. Michael Kelley, the North Coast Director of Lay Servant Ministries, and Jenny Gee of the Lay Servant Ministries Committee, will be the leaders for this workshop.

Registration cost is $22 which will help cover material costs (this does not include the required book) and refreshments. *Participants are requested to obtain their own copy of the book to be used. Books may be found via the links above in each course description.
