“Baby Arabia” is a documentary film that takes you on a lively musical journey with a Thai-Muslim country band that plays a unique fusion of Arab, Malay and Thai country numbers as they perform at mosque fairs, circumcision rites and Islamic weddings in Bangkok and Ayutthaya.
The band’s jolting, upbeat and exotic repertoire fuses Arabic and Malay lyrics with Thai country rhythm, and in the process captures the little-known sounds and images of Islamic subculture in Thailand.
This striking documentary (75 mins) was made in 2010 by three friends, Kong Rithdee, Panu Aree and Kaweenipon Ketprasith. The trio have been making films about Muslim people in Thailand for over 15 years. Their first film, “The Convert” (2008), tells the story of a Buddhist woman who converts to Islam to marry a Muslim man.
Their latest collaboration (2024) is the feature film “Dan Sarb” (“The Cursed Land”), an Islamic supernatural film starring Ananda Everingham and Bront Palarae, in a story that combines elements of horror with a poignant historical reckoning. The Cursed Land has just been released in Thai cinemas.
On this evening, co-writer Kong and director Panu will show excerpts and discuss their work.

Kong Rithdee, writer, film critic and deputy director, Thai Film Archive.
