What do the Monkees and Lovin’ Spoonful have in common, besides the obvious fact that they were on pop charts at roughly the same time in the 1960’s? For one thing, the creators of The Monkees TV show initially sought to case the Lovin’ Spoonful to star in it before moving on to cast the legendary foursome of Jones, Dolenz, Nesmith and Tork. For another, the DMV’s own Jelly Roll Mortals have played separate tributes to both bands in the last several years.
Why not have a best of both, you might ask? OK, game on. Sunday, August 23, 2 – 4 pm, at Hank Dietle’s Tavern, Jelly Roll Mortals present Spoonful of Monkees, two non-stop hours of the best of both bands. First half of the show covers Lovin’ Spoonful, second half, The Monkees. Choose your favorite half or, better still, choose both. Your call. This is no daydream, believe us.
