About this Event
Raku originated in Japan as a method of making and firing ceremonial wares. It is a unique and fast way of firing ceramics, allowing participants to leave with their finished pieces by the end of the evening (typically, it takes a minimum of 24 hours for ceramics to be fired and cooled; Raku takes less than 2 hours). Participants will decorate their premade bisque-fired ceramics with Raku-specific glazes. If you make work at home or in another studio, you are also welcome to bring your own pots to glaze/fire at no additional charge. Once glazed, the pots are quickly fired to approximately 1940°F before being pulled out of the kiln while hot and placed in a metal bucket of sawdust. The pots then smolder in the sawdust, reducing the oxygen in the atmosphere. This process creates unique effects that are specific to Raku firing. Raku firing is enjoyable for people of all levels, especially those with a specific interest in atmospheric firing methods.
