About this Event
Since beginning of his career in the mid-1970s, James Reid has performed hundreds of times throughout the United States and Canada appearing in concerts for guitar societies, colleges and universities, and for arts councils. He has also been a featured artist at numerous festivals including the Sun Waves Guitar Festival in Miami, the Portland Guitar Festival, Guitar New Orleans, The Guitar and Lute Institute, The Elkhorn Festival, and the Fairbanks Summer Music Festival. He is the founder of the Northwest Guitar Festival—the oldest and largest classical guitar festival in the states and provinces that it serves—and the president of the Idaho Guitar Society.
One of the Northwest's most visible classical guitarists, Paul Grove has been praised by audiences, critics, composers, and teachers as an outstanding performer and teacher on the classic guitar. His love of music has brought him before enthusiastic audiences throughout the U.S., Canada, Russia, Brazil, and India. Paul has been a featured soloist with the Spokane Symphony, the Coeur d’Alene Symphony, The Gonzaga University Symphony, and several other regional ensembles. Dr. Grove is on the faculties of Gonzaga University and North Idaho College.
An in-demand teacher, Michael Millham maintains studios at Gonzaga University and Spokane Falls Community College and is an active clinician. A regular and reputable soloist and ensemble player, he has been a featured performer for numerous regional festivals including the Northwest Guitar Festival, the Northwest Bach Festival, the Festival at Sandpoint, and Northwest Folklife’s guitar showcase in McCaw hall, among others. His duo (with his wife, vocalist Keleren Millham) has performed at venues ranging from wine bars and house concerts to radio shows, theaters, universities and festivals: over 2,000 performances to date. He is a graduate of the Lionel Hampton School of Music-University of Idaho and the host of KPBX/Spokane Public Radio's popular show “The Guitar Hour.”
John Paul Shields has been performing and teaching guitar for over 20 years. He has played in a variety of settings, from libraries to international festivals, from local television to National Peruvian radio. In 2008, he moved to Peru and began studying Peruvian Andean guitar music, eventually leading him to study with Raúl García Zárate, one of the 100 most influential people in Latin America. John Paul recorded the CD Lonesome Coyote with James Reid in their duo, "South Hill Guitars," as well as the 152 musical tracks to the Peruvian Guitar method, Método Guitarra Andina Peruana, written by Luis Salazar Mejía. He is currently the guitar professor at EWU and Yakima Valley College.
