Spirituality for Success Book Club November Meeting
About this Event
Meditations, Part II: The Life We Live
If we learn to govern ourselves, how does that change the way we move through the world?
In October, our book club began a two-part exploration of Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations—the private reflections of a Roman emperor trying, day after day, to live according to the principles he believed were true.
In November, we continue with Books 7–12, carrying the conversation outward.
Marcus repeatedly reminds himself that human beings do not exist in isolation. We belong to communities. We encounter difficult people. We experience disappointment, change, injustice, illness, success, failure, aging, and loss. And through all of it, we still have choices about who we become and how we meet the world around us.
Together, we’ll explore questions like:
- What do we owe to other people simply because we share this life with them?
- How can we respond to difficult people without becoming what we dislike in them?
- What does it mean to live “according to nature”?
- Can accepting impermanence make us more—not less—engaged with life?
- How do duty and service relate to personal freedom?
- What does Marcus believe makes a life meaningful?
- And how might inner discipline ripple outward into the way we affect our families, communities, and world?
Philosophy as Practice
As you read Books 7–12, continue to approach Meditations slowly.
Rather than asking only, “What does Marcus Aurelius believe?”, try asking:
What do I believe?
What principle would I actually want to practice?
Where do I disagree?
Where am I being challenged?
And which ideas become different when I try to apply them to a real human life rather than considering them in the abstract?
No expertise in philosophy is required. There are no “right” answers waiting at the table.
Just bring your questions, your perspective, and your curiosity about one of humanity’s oldest and most persistent challenges:
How do we live well?
