Butoh is a Japanese avant-garde dance form founded by Tatsumi Hijihata, Kazuo Ohno, and Akira Kasai in 1959. Created as a tool to explore the original authenticity of the Japanese body it has spread in Europe since the 80's creating a new generation of Butoh dancers that employ this tool to explore their own bodies. There are as many Butoh dances as Butoh dancers. The body of Butoh is pre-cultural, archaic, untamed, and a Holistic body where there is no longer distinction made between the physical and the spiritual. Butoh is an exploration tool to dig deep into one's bodily subconscious, to keen the senses, enhance perception and develop a stronger presence alongside movement creativity, strength, flexibility, and resistance.
Butoh is a tool for self-discovery and expression and a powerful performative art form.
I call my research in the field of Butoh “the Spiritual Mechanism” and in classes and workshops, I teach my method based on the analysis and the cross-overs of tools and perspectives I gathered in over 20 yrs of studies.
