Spirit of the waters.

Crowle Entertainers present an exciting new play with music about the turbulent history of the drainage of the Isle.
Our play, an exciting combination of drama and folk song, tells the strange and sometimes violent story about an important few years in our local history. In 1626 the landscape of the Isle of Axholme was very different from the way it looks today. People made a living from the watery landscape and told stories about strange creatures like Tiddy Mun who inhabited the marshes. So, when King Charles I contracted with the Dutch engineer Vermuyden to drain the Isle, the repercussions led to violence, insurrection and rioting. Our play follows the fortunes of two Isle families divided by their beliefs but thrown together by love and marriage. Woven amongst these stories is another intriguing strand about some strange marsh creatures who combine their unique powers with a passionate love of the landscape, and embody the spirit of the waters.
