This course provides instruction and hands-on training in K9 first aid, intervention for common injuries, and medical emergencies. Handlers will learn how to treat their K9 partners in the field, giving them the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively during real-world deployments.
This course is instructed by Dr. Shannon Vawter, DVM, MS, a Medical Director with over a decade of emergency and clinical experience and 15 years working directly with law enforcement K9 teams. She has provided on-call care for working dogs and taught numerous courses for first responders, bringing real-world, operationally relevant medical training to the classroom.
Handlers are encouraged to bring their K9s, as they may be utilized during portions of the hands-on training. Dr. Vawter also builds in plenty of breaks to allow handlers to check on and care for their dogs when they are not actively involved in training.
The goal of our Spike’s School program is to educate through top-notch, hands-on training from exceptional and recognized instructors across the country. Quality training leads to increased effectiveness in the field and safer handling, protecting both K9s and their partners.
