The Spider-Man that won us over in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR debuted in full in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, set firmly – finally – in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.In a world where gods travel between worlds, iron men take to the skies, and hundred-year-old soldiers battle for freedom, Spider-Man can’t even get out of Queens. 16-year-old Peter Parker has been gifted with awesome powers, but he still has school, chores, and a social life to look after. But after fighting Captain America and his team in CIVIL WAR, Spidey’s eyes are on the larger world. His mentor, Tony Stark, wants him to stay put in his outer borough existence, but when a new supervillain with a powerful laser weapon comes on the scene, Spidey can’t help but get involved. After all, with great power, there must also come great responsibility.
This reboot of Marvel’s flagship superhero got it right – Tom Holland is energetic and awkward as young Peter Parker, flippantly mouthing off while delivering flip kicks to the mouths of bad guys. Robert Downey Jr. swoops in as Tony Stark, reminding us all that Spidey now inhabits a larger universe. And the great Michael Keaton goes from Batman to Birdman to the Vulture, a technologically-inclined villain who finds his best-laid plans stymied by a kid who needs a date to his homecoming dance.
Directed by Jon Watts, whose COP CAR blew us away with its funny and emotionally honest look at young boys in trouble, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING captures the essence of early Spider-Man comics, filtered through the works of great teen auteur John Hughes. It’s a superhero movie unlike any you’ve seen before, filled with laughs, heart, and stakes that are personal, grounded, and meaningful. They should be personal: after all, he’s your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
