About DJ Stingray 313:
DJ Stingray 313 is an eminent pioneer in the electronic music world.
His musical catalog covers themes and concepts regarding modern science, genetics, healthcare, technology and their effects on the human condition.
His earliest productions appeared in 1987 as a collaboration with Lou Robinson (of Scan 7) under the group name Nasa with “Time To Party” and “Cant Stop Now”.
Stingray’s solo productions appeared later under the Urban Tribe moniker on Carl Craig’s Planet E Communications label (“Covert Action”). 1998’s debut of “The Collapse Of Modern Culture” on James Lavelle’s Mo’Wax label turned Urban Tribe into a collaborative effort, adding Carl Craig, Anthony “Shake” Shakir and Moodymann to the group.
His most notable connection, however, is through the iconic electro outfit of James Stinson and Gerald Donald aka Drexciya. As Mystic Tribe A.I., Stingray’s early credit was on Stinson’s (as The Other People Place) “Sunday Night Live at the Laptop Cafe” 12” via Clone Records.
Further meetings with the duo earned him the name “Drexciyan DJ Stingray”, subsequently becoming Stinson and Donald’s official touring DJ.
Donning his emblematic balaclava, his cyborg-like DJ sets continue to leave audiences captivated globally for decades. This skilled approach to the dancefloor gives him quite the in-demand gig schedule, appearing at landmark festivals and venues like Tresor Berlin, Glastonbury, Dekmantel, Movement Festival (Detroit), Making Time (USA), Sonar Festival (Barcelona), Berghain, Dimensions Festival, and Berlin Atonal.
Stingray’s career continued on as DJ Stingray 313 (and as Stingray313, respectively), after Stinson’s passing in 2002 in respect of the Drexciyan legacy. His ever-unique productions have seen releases on Mahogani Music, Warp Records, Rephlex (“Misinformation Campaign” EP), Tresor (Kern, Vol. 4), and Unknown To The Unknown (Imping Is Easy). Collaborative EPs on WéMè Records with Gerald Donald and Penelope Martin were released in 2012 under the enigmatic NRSB-11 moniker.
DJ Stingray 313’s music and sets are met with high praise in the media, with constant appearances in DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, The Wire, Pitchfork and Fact Magazine, as well as mixes on BBC radio.
His Micron Audio imprint also continues the representation of his futuristic template, embodying his signature sound of electro and techno. Aside from creating Micron as home to release his music – see the inimitable “Electronic Countermeasures” EP – he releases music from emerging artists in accord with his vision including Galaxian, Ctris, Loka and 6SISS.
DJ Stingray 313 remains a steadfast figure in his uncompromising sound, craftily setting the soundtrack to the not-too-distant future. – J. Howard
About Kode9:
Kode9, born Steve Goodman, is a seminal figure in electronic music, known for his innovative approach to sound and his ability to blend academic insights with club culture.
As the founder of Hyperdub, Goodman has influenced a wide spectrum of electronic sounds, pioneering genres as Dubstep, UK Garage and Grime, and supporting groundbreaking artists like Burial, DJ Rashad & Fatima Al Qadiri.
His scholarly work, notably his book Sonic Warfare, underpins his musical output with a deep theoretical foundation. His music often reflects themes of socio-political relevance, utilizing sound as a tool to explore and comment on contemporary issues. Distinctively, it is characterized by a meticulous attention to rhythm and texture.
Kode9’s work incorporates complex, broken beats with a dense, atmospheric layering of sounds, creating a dynamic experience that is as intellectually stimulating as it is visceral. Through albums like Nothing and Escapology, he continues to push the limits of what electronic music can represent, making him not just a musician, but a modern-day digital philosopher.
