This class offers a deep and thoughtful exploration of the Egyptian Books of the Dead - not just as a single text, but as a living tradition that evolved over millennia.
Participants will be guided through the historical development of Egypt’s funerary and afterlife literature, from the earliest Pyramid Texts, through the Coffin Texts, and into what we now collectively call the Book of the Dead.
Beyond history, the course examines the philosophical and spiritual worldview embedded within these texts: concepts of the soul, the nature of the afterlife, moral balance, judgment, transformation, and the soul’s passage through the Duat. We will explore how spells, hymns, and sacred utterances functioned not merely as funerary rites, but as technologies of spiritual navigation and empowerment.
The class also addresses how these sacred works survive today, by examining modern scholarship through the digital preservation of ancient papyri.
Participants will gain insight into how museums, archives, and digital humanities projects are ensuring that these ancient voices remain accessible in the modern world.
This class is ideal for those drawn to the mysteries of death, transformation, and sacred text. No prior knowledge is required, only curiosity, respect, and a willingness to walk the ancient paths of the soul.
