§ 2-110. Mayoral Vacancy and Successor Selection
(a) Upon resignation or vacancy of the Mayor, the City Commission shall declare the office vacant at the next meeting.
(b) Within ten (10) days, the City shall hold a Community Advisory Session, open to all residents, to receive nominations and public comment on potential successors.
(c) Candidate names shall be published for no fewer than seven (7) days before the Commission votes.
(d) The Commission shall appoint an interim mayor in an open meeting, after considering public input, and all records of nominations and comments shall remain public.
(e) This is what the City can and should do. At present, it is safe to assume the Commission is self-selecting replacements behind closed doors, excluding the very community that elects its leaders. Such practice undermines public trust and concentrates power in the hands of a few instead of the people.
