Children and grandchildren brought up in a Christian home go off to college and come back with strange beliefs far removed from reality and what they learned in Confirmation Class. What’s missing?
Throughout the centuries the Christian Church has provided a defense and evidence for the truth of Christianity. That’s what apologetics is. Faith in Jesus Christ is not blind. Evidence for Christianity is amazing, overwhelming, and sets it apart from all other religions and worldviews. Apologetics was a key factor and emphasis in the early Christian Church. And it had to be: Christianity was a small fish swimming upstream against a flood of paganism, polytheism, and deceptive philosophies. The case had to be made for its truth, and for its claims about the person and work of Jesus Christ. And at the same time the Church taught how other religions and worldviews not only could not deliver, but how they might lead Christians away from Christ.
The Christian Church today is very similar. More and more we live in a post-Christian culture. Some worldviews and beliefs have taken society by storm, including some that are essentially insane. And yet we find them promoted and embedded everywhere in culture, trying to push true Christianity further to the fringes, and often taking Christians, young Christians, captive.
Apologetics, when done right and in accord with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, instills confidence, encourages, emboldens, and, most importantly, points to Christ – his person, his work, and the salvation he accomplished.

• What evidence can and cannot do (its limitations)
• Problems when we do not defend Christian truth when we can (reasons to use it)
• Examples from the Bible
• Examples from today
• Would our children, relatives, friends, neighbors benefit from apologetics?
• Two easy-to-use ways of defending the truth of Christianity.
