William Dampier was, to quote Michael Preston, A Pirate of Exquisite Mind.
This presentation highlights the important contributions Dampier made to navigation and science. He wrote two books which became best sellers of their time and were used by many navigators and authors for their work. Defoe and Swift acknowledged Dampier for providing some inspiration for Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver’s Travels.
Dampier was the first to circumnavigate the world three times. He has also been described as Australia‘s first natural historian.
His observations and analysis of natural history helped Alexander von Humbolt and Charles Darwin develop their scientific theories.
