The Silk Road connected Medieval Europe and China with caravans of camels trekking through the remote mountains and deserts of Central Asia. It brought fabulous wealth to cities like Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand, but it also brought destruction in the form of nomads like Genghis Kahn and Tamerlane. Conquered by Russia in the 1800s these lands became republics of the USSR, which itself inflicted great suffering on the people and damage to the environment. Join us for an unforgettable evening as historian, traveler and storyteller Richard Jordan takes us on a journey through one of the most legendary trade routes in history.
Richard Jordan has always loved to write and speak about local history and his many travels. Richard is the Chief Historian of the Etobicoke Historical Society, and a former President of EHS and board member for many years. For seven years, Richard contributed a local history column called Heritage to the Toronto Star. His feature articles on a variety of topics have appeared in the Saturday Star and Sunday Star, as well as international history and genealogy magazines. His family history book, Beyond the Great Pine Ridge, was published in 2004 and his most recent book, Ernest D. Banting and Life in Weston 1921-1973, was published in 2022. Retirement has allowed Richard the time to travel the world and has added talks about his time touring Iceland, China, Ireland and the Netherlands as well as walking the Nakasendo Trail in Japan and along the full length of Hadrian’s Wall in England.
