Katy Hosokawa is the new ranger at the National Key Deer Refuge. Ranger Katy moved to the Keys last fall with a background as the Volunteer Coordinator at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge and a wealth of experience in environmental education and guiding across multiple states, including Colorado, Texas, and Georgia, Katy has a deep commitment to connecting people with nature.
Originally from North Texas, her journey into environmental stewardship began early in life, fueled by a profound love for the natural world. With a Bachelor's degree in Geography from Northeastern State University and a Master's in Environmental Geoscience from the University of Northern Colorado, Katy's goals are clear: to find happiness and to save the world through conservation. As she embraces this new chapter in the Florida Keys, Katy eagerly anticipates the adventures and opportunities to engage with the local community, inspiring others to join her in safeguarding our planet's precious ecosystems.
Her talk at the Key West Botanical Garden will be about the places where people and wildlife thrive- the national wildlife refuges of the Florida Keys. Living with in a mosaic of protected lands is a unique and beautiful experience, and Katy will share some of the highlights. Katy will share some of the rich history of the National Wildlife Refuge System, talk about some of the work being done in the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and why it is all so important.
