Our Speaker Series features Retired U.S. Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander Daryle Layton. Daryle spent 3 years in Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 12 (HM-12), tasked with clearing U.S. mines from the coast and harbors of North Vietnam at the end of the Vietnam War. These mines had been placed by the U.S. between May - June 1972 as part of Operation Pocket Money which effectively closed all of North Vietnam's harbors.
This presentation will include an overview of the Vietnam War, why the coast and harbors of North Vietnam were mined, and the cease-fire that followed. Daryle will also discuss the technology of U.S. mines, why helicopters were employed for mine-sweeping, and how a hydrofoil sled (Mark-105) pulled behind a CH-53 helicopter was used.
General admission rates apply, but event registration is not necessary. This event is free for members!
