Dr. Laurie McManus, Associate Professor of Music History and Literature at Shenandoah University, will discuss her new book, "Brahms In the Priesthood of Art: Gender and Art Religion in the Nineteenth-Century German Musical Imagination." Food and drink will be available for purchase and Dr. McManus will have copies of her book for sale and signing.
This event will be held in the "Bullpen" (lower level) at Bulls and Bears restaurant in downtown Hagerstown (across from the Maryland Theatre).

About Dr. McManus
Laurie McManus’s broad interests in aesthetics, gender, and the intersection of the arts inform both her teaching and research. Her research concerns nineteenth-century music and culture, especially in relation to Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner. Her book, “Brahms in the Priesthood of Art,” was published by Oxford University Press in early 2021. She has presented at national and international conferences, and has published in Nineteenth-Century Music, the Journal of Music History Pedagogy, Jazz Perspectives, Studi Musicali and the American Brahms Society Newsletter. Her research has been supported by a fellowship from the Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies, the Karl Geiringer dissertation award from the American Brahms Society and the Bozarth Award from the American Musicological Society. She is now a member of the American Brahms Society Board of Directors.
