Save Split Oak is calling on the community to show up and be heard at a critical moment in our fight to stop the toll road.On Tuesday, January 13th, we are hosting a press conference followed by a coordinated public comment mobilization at the Orange County Board of County Commissioners meeting. Recent developments have created a major shift in momentum in favor of the Save Split Oak campaign, and this day is our push to turn that momentum into action.
At 8:00 AM, Save Split Oak will hold a press conference to highlight new and alarming information about the toll road’s impacts. At 9:00 AM, we will mobilize a strong turnout for public comment, urging Orange County commissioners to take action.
Commissioner Wilson has scheduled a discussion at the Orange County Commission meeting regarding the impact of the Central Florida Expressway Authority toll road on Eagles Roost, another GreenPLACE conservation area. This land, like Split Oak Forest, is tax-funded conservation land that residents paid to protect. Prior boards were never fully briefed on the extent of additional conservation lands that would be impacted by this toll road alignment, including Eagles Roost and other conservation easements, all at a cost to the public.
Now, commissioners are being asked to review these impacts and consider whether the county can mitigate or prevent further harm. Save Split Oak believes this is a real opportunity to stop the toll road entirely, especially following a recent court ruling after a five-year lawsuit over Orange County’s voter-approved charter amendment to protect Split Oak Forest. The final oral arguments ended in Split Oak’s favor, restoring Orange County’s decision-making authority over mitigation land quality and approvals. Applications that were previously believed to be out of the county’s control must now go through the Orange County Commission.
What We Are Asking For:
1) Uphold the voter-approved charter protections and rescind the original 2019 Linear Facilities application to the Florida Communities Trust Board impacting Split Oak Forest.
2) Uphold the 1994 interlocal agreement by filing an injunction to stop Osceola County from entering new agreements with CFX and Tavistock without Orange County’s approval, as required when future impacts to the forest are planned.
3)Push back against CFX’s use of eminent domain and require an independent environmental assessment of any proposed mitigation lands, ensuring environmental quality and sensitivity are evaluated alongside financial considerations.
These are the demands we are fighting for through public comment and press engagement on January 13th. If you care about protecting Split Oak Forest, Eagles Roost, and our publicly funded conservation lands, we need you there.
