Special Forces operator and CIA agent Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) gets double-crossed and killed by his boss, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). But when Simmons arrives in Hell — yeah, buckle in — he’s greeted by a demon named Malebolgia who offers him a deal, as demons so often do. If Simmons will swear allegiance to Malebolgia and lead his armies in Hell at the end of the world, then he’ll let Simmons go back to Earth to see his beloved wife Wanda.
Demons being demons, Malebolgia has put some conditions on this deal. One, once he returns, Simmons finds that five years have passed on Earth. Two, he looks twisted and scarred. And three, he’s now being followed around by a foul, despicable little imp called the Violator, who appears in human form as a dirty clown (John Leguizamo). Edgy, dark and vulgar just like the ‘90s comics it was sourced from, Spawn is a fascinating showcase of early digital effects and a true relic of its time.
