About this Event

(SYMT) is the flagship music program of the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., launched in 2022. Created to support and elevate the careers of emerging Spanish musicians, SYMTfosters artistic exchange and professional growth through collaborations with leading U.S. music schools, universities, and festivals.

More than just a performance opportunity, SYMT offers a comprehensive international experience. Participating musicians take part in a dynamic array of complementary activities —including masterclasses, lectures, workshops, and networking events— designed to expand their artistic vision and build meaningful professional connections.

All featured artists are under the age of 33 and winners of the prestigious national award from Juventudes Musicales de España, a distinction that recognizes outstanding young musical talent.

Program

Inspired by the Sisters of the Moon paintings by the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, the concept behind this album revolves around the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, metaphorically embodied by the composers featured on this album: Montgeroult, Mendelssohn, Beach, Larrocha, Boulanger, Price, Montero, Pérez and Susana Gómez Vázquez. That is why most of the works on Sisters of the Moon are either linked to night-time, when the stars can be glimpsed in the sky, or related to love and dancing. Sisters of the Moon is an ode to that cluster of female composers who, despite their different nationalities and cultures, connect us through this fascinating voyage of sonorities.

  • Hélène de Montgeroult (1784-1836): Etudes 37 y 111.
  • Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847): June and September.
  • Amy Beach (1867-1944): Hermit Thrush at Eve y Hermit Thrush at Morn.
  • Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979): 3 little pieces for piano.
  • Alicia de Larrocha (1923-2009): Festívola.
  • Iluminada Pérez (1972-): Le sette sorelle dal cielo (the seven sisters of the sky)- for piano and electronics.
  • Susana Gómez Vázquez (1995-): Interludio (Oda a Kassia).
  • Claudia Montero (1962-2022) : Rondo Septiembre.
  • Susana Gómez Vázquez (1995-): Ella.
  • Florence Price (1887-1953): Fantasie Nègre no.1 in E minor.
