About this Event
Extraordinary dresses are front and center in Diego Velázquez’s most famous portraits of the Spanish royal family. Those dresses were created by a court tailor named Mateo Aguado, whose instantly recognizable style gives Baroque Spanish fashion its distinctive look and continues to influence designers today. Aguado’s long-lost creations are brought to life in Amanda Wunder’s award-winning book, Spanish Fashion in the Age of Velázquez. Wunder, professor of History at Lehman College and of Art History and History at the CUNY Graduate Center, discusses her research and contemporary echoes of Aguado’s aesthetic in conversation with Jonquil O’Reilly, head of sale for Old Master Paintings at Christie’s.Presented with the Ph.D. Program in Art History.
