This workshop focuses on body awareness and body perception in order to approach the Butoh body. We will learn different methods to dissolve consciousness and immerse ourselves in the Space Body.Space Body – in Japanese, Chūtai – is a concept by Akaji Maro, the director of the Butoh company Dairakudakan, and refers to the Butoh body, which is moved by the "negative" space surrounding it.
In contrast to the "positive" space, the human body itself, which moves consciously and is connected to the ego, the "negative" space is connected to someone or something outside of oneself, and the Space Body is moved by it. The dance thus becomes a "passive activity." The ego is dissolved, and the body, a shell without predefined functions, discovers the world openly like a newborn who knows neither hand nor foot, but explores the world without prejudice.
Although an empty shell, during the Butoh dance, attention is paid to every single fiber of the entire body. No body part, whether face, toe, or arm, is neglected; rather, each is perceived, treated, and used equally. Through targeted exercises, the connection between the respective image, the body, the resulting movement, and the subsequent sensation is trained. In the process, we will perceive the smallest movements and minimal changes in energy, leading to an intense body-dance experience.
