How did children learn about the stars, planets and the wider universe before the space age?
Join us at Space Park Leicester for an engaging afternoon with Dr Charlotte May, who will explore the remarkable educational texts and games that introduced generations of children to astronomy during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Drawing on the University of Nottingham's internationally significant Manuscripts and Special Collections, Dr May will showcase a fascinating selection of historical resources, revealing how astronomy was taught, understood and enjoyed by both children and their teachers.
Among the highlights will be The Pleasures of Astronomy, a beautifully illustrated educational game dating from 1804, revised and approved by Mrs Bryan, offering a unique insight into early science education.
Whether you have an interest in astronomy, history, education or rare collections, this free public talk offers a fascinating journey through the history of science communication.
About the Speaker
Dr Charlotte May
Dr Charlotte May works with one of the UK's most significant collections of historical educational texts. Her research explores children's literature, education and the history of learning, using rare books and archival collections to understand how knowledge has been shared across generations.
