About this Event

Space ISSO

Class 24.11.0b

Note: This course is a prototype course. Students will be asked to provide feedback and participate in additional surveys to refine and improve the value of the course.

Course Description: This intensive Space Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) course provides a comprehensive foundation in cybersecurity tailored for the unique challenges of space systems. Participants will master fundamental information security concepts, legal frameworks, and risk management strategies while gaining specialized knowledge in satellite communications and ground station security. The curriculum integrates hands-on learning through simulations and real-world case studies, complemented by essential systems engineering principles and soft skills development. Covering everything from technical proficiency in security controls and incident response to effective communication and leadership in space operations, this course prepares ISSOs to safeguard critical space infrastructure against evolving threats. Graduates will emerge with the expertise to develop and implement robust security measures for space missions, aligning with industry standards and certifications while adapting to the dynamic landscape of space technology and cybersecurity.

This comprehensive course is structured into three week-long components, each designed to progressively build your expertise as a Space ISSO:

  1. Foundational: Master the essential Knowledge, Skills, and Tasks (KSTs) or Abilities (KSAs) required for Space ISSOs.
  2. Intermediate: Engage in hands-on ISSO activities and labs, applying your knowledge to real-world scenarios. This will include a comprehensive team exercise.
  3. Expert: Develop critical thinking skills to tackle complex ISSO tasks, preparing you for high-level challenges in the field. This will include Capture The Flag style exercises and challenges.

Our goal is to provide a transformative learning experience that maximizes efficiency and long-term retention. Unlike traditional "memorize and forget" approaches, this course emphasizes practical application and deep understanding, ensuring you're well-equipped for your role as a Space ISSO.

Who Should Attend: Participants should be mid-career, seeking and applying for ISSO roles in space systems. Participants should meet prerequisites for the positions (clearance, years of experience, education/certification requirements) to facilitate position fulfillment. A foundational understanding of information security principles and a keen interest in space technology are essential. The program is particularly suited for those looking to transition from general IT security to space-specific roles and those already in the space industry seeking to specialize in cybersecurity. Participants should be prepared for an intensive, hands-on learning experience and be committed to ongoing professional development in this rapidly evolving field.

By the end of this course, participants will: Be equipped to effectively secure and manage information systems for space missions, applying specialized knowledge of both cybersecurity principles and space systems. Demonstrate proficiency in risk assessment, security control implementation, and incident response within the unique context of satellite communications and ground station operations. Possess the technical skills, systems thinking approach, and soft skills necessary to excel in Space ISSO roles, ensuring the integrity and resilience of critical space infrastructure against evolving cyber threats.

This course is hosted by Code Talkers Engineering in partnership with Purdue University cyberTAP (https://cyber.tap.purdue.edu/) and Space ISAC (https://spaceisac.org/) as part of DARPA's Cyber Operations Preparedness and Education STTR Phase 1 project, to push forward the state-of-the-art in rapid and effective cybersecurity training by assessing the scope of the cybersecurity workforce gap within the U.S., determining the feasibility of a new training/education framework, and developing a prototype training platform.
