About this Event

We are on the road to select our 2023 Meta-Four Houston Poetry Slam Team to head to Brave New Voices in San Francisco, CA

Read below:

1) We have an eventbrite link for each slam! Space City Grand Slam and we have social media posts and eflyers. PLEASE SHARE EVERYWHERE AND WITH EVERYONE!

2) The finals will be held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Brown Theatre at 6pm on April 6th, 2023. If you are to advance to the Grand Slam your call all time will be for 5:30pm. Not 5:45 or 5:50 but 5:30 pm. Garage parking will be free for all. Details on where to park will be coming soon.

3) For each prelim slam you will need two poems under the time-limit, 3 mins 30 secs. You can repeat the poems through the prelims and can repeat poems you used from the prelims but, you will need at least 2 poems for the Grand Slam.

4) Rules being: That each of you will have 5 judges who score each round of poems between 0.0 and 10.0. We drop the highest and drop the lowest and add the 3 middle scores with your highest individual score being a 30. You have 3 min 40 seconds to say your original poem. If you go over your time limit for every 10 seconds you lose .5 from your total score. Time starts once you make an interaction with the audience. No personal props, props, costumes, wardrobe changes, animal acts, keep your clothes on (no nudity), or musical accompaniment (ie you can't use a musical instrument), and this an individual competition, meaning just on stage. Yes, it is an uncensored mic but, consider your audience and if you need to mention a trigger warning, please use it!

5) From each slam the top 3 or 4 poets with the highest cumulative score from the 1st and 2nd roundwill advance to the Finals.

6) Dress to impress and

7) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND PRACTICE. Practice your poems in front of mirrors, parents, siblings, classmates, and whoever else will listen.

8) Your poems do not need to be memorized or choreographed but it helps when they are. Just saying.
