Fifty years ago, the youth of Soweto changed the world. On June 16, 2026, Harlem brings that story home.
About this Event

Voza Rivers and New Heritage Theatre Group, celebrating its 61st anniversary as the oldest Black not-for-profit theater in New York State, present SOWETO 50: We R The Future, a Black Music Month and Juneteenth Celebration honoring the global connections that have shaped our nation’s history.

Program:

  1. Soweto 50 Commemoration and Talk featuring Voza Rivers & Government Officials
  2. Film Screening of “Voices of Sarafina!” (1989) with Director Nigel Noble

Special guest appearances and performances by:

  • Leleti Khumalo, Tony-nominated star of Sarafina! Broadway & Film
  • Academy Award-nominated and Grammy Award-nominated IMPACT Repertory Theatre,
  • Atandwa Kani (Black Panther and Young Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Sipho Kunene, and special guests!

The historic Soweto Uprising on June 16, 1976 inspired Broadway’s African musical in 1988, Sarafina! Over 700+ South African youth were massacred during these student protests against the apartheid government's Bantu Education policy.

Sarafina! is a celebration of the resilience and courage of those South African students who triumphed in the fight against oppression. Sarafina! received five TONY Award-nominations and a Grammy Award-nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
