'Southern Cities Architecture, Part 3: New Orleans' Webinar

The American South is the location of some of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the United States. From tidewater Virginia to the mouth of the Mississippi, these centers were hubs of commerce, culture, and an economy based on enslavement — before and after the American Civil War. It's time to explore the cities of the American South and uncover their influence on American forms of government, society, and life.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of Southern cities and their architecture, where we'll examines the buildings and structures that have shaped history since colonial times. In Part Three: New Orleans, we'll visit one of the most mythologized cities in the world; the city where jazz was invented and Creole and Cajun cultures mixed with Native, African and Anglo- American influences to create one of the most polyglot centers of its time.

Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:

• A brief overview of the city's earliest surviving buildings
• A close look at the history of the fabulous French Quarter, the “Vieux Carre”
• The development of the Garden District
• The canyons of downtown and Canal Street
• The distinctive Modernism of Louisiana
• An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
