South Korea’s Fight for Democracy: A Screening of A Taxi Driver

The Korean peninsula exerts an outsized influence on almost every facet of the world today. It is a critical engine of the global economy, a major source of global pop culture, and a volatile flashpoint of geopolitical tensions. To better understand this important region, the Global Asian Studies Program is proud to host the Rethinking Korea: New Perspectives on a Critical Region speakers series. Now in its second year, the series continues to invite an interdisciplinary roster of scholars to offer novel perspectives on Korea while situating its complex place within global developments.

Prior to the film screening of A Taxi Driver, the event will feature a short lecture by Chan Yong Bu, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. Professor Bu has numerous published articles and book chapters on Korean culture and cinema and co-curated a film exhibition at the Harvard Film Archive on Korean War and postwar films. He is currently writing a book on the media history of South Korean steel factories.

The speakers series is made possible by the South Korea Initiative Fund, which is dedicated to helping establish an institutional commitment to Korean Studies at Northeastern, offering financial support to students studying or working in Korea, and educating the community about important issues regarding Korea in the world.
