About this Event
Commenced in 1837 as private gardens, South Cliff Gardens were significantly extended in 6 phases under differing ownership, during Victorian and Edwardian times, providing areas of public as well as private access and reflecting fashions of the time.
Following grants and local fundraising totaling over £7m, including £4.6m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, they have recently been restored.
This visit will be led by Adrian Perry, Chair of Scarborough Civic Society who will discuss the history of the gardens and the highlights and challenges of the restoration during a morning talk before leading a largely step free downhill afternoon walk to view the highlighted features. For those who wish, there will be the opportunity to return to Esplanade level by cliff lift at the end of the visit.
After parking on the esplanade and opposite around 44 Esplanade, there is a short walk (with a rose garden on the right) to our meeting place, Beeforth’s Hive.
Please bring a picnic lunch or there are many places to buy lunch nearby.
Ticket cost: £15.00 non-members £18.00 includes refreshments.
Organisers: Maddy Hughes, Paul Knox and Malcolm Pickles
Further details including directions will be sent to ticket holders in advance of the event
