Soup Activists (Arizona, USA) - https://soupactivists.bandcamp.com/(Inscrutable Records)
amazing weirdo-punk post-pop out of St. Louis—think ’60s-inspired TELEVISION PERSONALITIES-adjacent stuff if they let Gordon Gano write lyrics and play xylophone for them. The band is helmed by Martin Meyer of LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS notoriety, and takes the energy and angsty shock of that project and gives it the JONATHAN RICHMAN treatment with sinisterly sweet storytelling lyrics and simple melodies that get stuck in your head like a food stain you can’t get out. Slightly reminiscent of Devon Williams leaving OSKER after their antithetic punk scene opus “Idle Will K*ll” to form FINGERS CUT MEGAMACHINE and whatever else he’s doing these days. - MRR
CLASS (Missouri, USA)- https://nowthatsclass.bandcamp.com/
(Feel It / Total Punk / Drunken Sailor records)
CLASS careens from sounding like the BOYS to the sneering power pop of WHITE HEAT. The wizardry of songcrafting is something to behold, with layers of harmonies propelling ordinary melodies into the orbit of a higher plane. CLASS doesn’t sound that much like the EXPLODING HEARTS, but they draw from the same wellspring of influences...striking gold where others have come up empty-handed. - MRR
Eel Men
https://eelmen.bandcamp.com/
Eel Men formed in 2021. Couched in the instability of the present and the microcosm of North London, they prioritise angular guitars, straight rhythms and fanatical storytelling. After a long series of sweaty UK gigs and having already toured extensively around Europe, with gigs ranging from family friendly festivals to ex gestapo headquarters turned anarchist squats, there’s lots more on the horizon. Giving new meaning to hard working in the current climate of 'band music' - with a follow up to the debut LP already in the making and due for release next year.
GRAZIA
https://grazia.bandcamp.com
In Poor Taste” is the debut EP from Grazia - written and recorded by Heather Dunlop and Lindsay Corstorphine. Often referential - In Poor Taste pulls inspiration from the high and low brow, but mostly the low. Grazia pays homage to everything from The Fall to cheap lingerie brands in a campy pastiche of 80’s new wave and pop. In Poor Taste is all about having a lot of fun while delving into your worst, core self
