Sounds of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Action in Solidarity brings you a performance of Zimbabwean soundscapes, original poems, and traditional song and dance. This is the culmination of a collaborative project between ZAS and Ryan Woods, a soundscape composer and PhD student at the University of Manchester. We worked together to explore our sensory experiences in moving to the UK and leaving behind a world of more familiar and now nostalgic sound.

The performances reflect on memory, migration and identity and bring a far-off home to the one we find ourselves in today. A wonderful afternoon for anyone longing to hear some Ndebele and Shona, listen to stories from south of the equator or just to fill yourself up with the wonderful spirit of Ngoma/iNgungu (rhythm, music and dance). We welcome you to join us!

ZAS (Zimbabwean Action in Solidarity) are a Leicester based group who run “drop-in centres” which provide local grassroot support for refugees and asylum seekers including alleviating isolation, recovering self-esteem, providing social opportunities, and breaking down barriers of misconception. The ZAS choir is a central component to this mission.

Ryan Woods is a PhD student at the University of Manchester studying electroacoustic composition at NOVARS research centre focusing on soundscape composition and ethnography as a way of exploring acoustic and cultural ecologies. He is cofounder of The Manchester Ear which facilitates sound walks in and around Manchester. He was also born in Harare, Zimbabwe.
