🎶 Presented by Nathanael Kumar & the Scandinavian Heritage Society
The Scandinavian Heritage Society (SHS) is proud to announce a musical collaboration with Eastman School of Music student Nathanael Kumar. This event is a part of a special promotional program sponsored by Eastman’s AMP Up grant to support community development in the Rochester area.
Nathanael is currently in his fourth year at Eastman, where he studies the euphonium, a low brass instrument known for its warmth and resonance. He was privileged enough to spend his elementary-school years in Stavanger, Norway, where he sang in choir, hiked Priekestolen, and marched in Syttende Mai parades every year. He’s been drawn to Nordic music ever since.
Nathanael will be playing music by four Scandinavians: legendary Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, contemporary Norwegians Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen and Bente Illevold, and the Swedish Romantic composer Hugo Alfvén. The program spans music as far back as 1904 (an arrangement of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto) and as recent as 2021 (Illevold’s folk-inspired Arv)!
At SHS, part of our mission is to share Scandinavian cultural and artistic heritage with the community. We have had a presence in Rochester for almost 80 years, starting out as The Edvard Grieg Lodge, then becoming Scandinavian Heritage Society under the umbrella of the international group Sons of Norway. Persons with Scandinavian heritage have held key positions with the Eastman School of Music and the Eastman Theatre, starting with Howard Hanson (director of the Eastman School, 1924–1964).
This project is supported in part by the Eastman School of Music with funding support by the Dean’s Fund.
