Sounds from Rooh is a curated live music series that brings together artists, genres, and communities through musical exploration and discovery.
For this edition, we're exploring how Indian classical music can evolve and take on new forms when it meets different genres.
Raagas to Rave is a journey through three distinct musical experiences, each building on the last.
Act 1: Traditional
We begin with the foundations of Indian classical music.
Featuring Ganesh on vocals and Unnikrishnan on mridangam, this 40-minute set explores the beauty of raagas through improvisation and musical conversations between the two artists.
An intimate experience that sets the tone for the evening.
Act 2: Fusion
What happens when Indian classical music meets R&B, blues, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock?
In this 40-minute set, Ganesh (vocals), Unnikrishnan (mridangam), Siddharth (guitar), and Zubin (synth) come together to explore four different raagas through four different genres.
Expect familiar sounds in unexpected places, with plenty of room for improvisation and experimentation.
Act 3: Electronic
We end the evening with a 40-minute electronic set by MALFNKTION, bringing together electronic music with elements and influences from Indian classical sounds.
A shift in energy that takes us from raagas to rave.
What to Expect
Welcome! Sounds from Rooh was created with a simple idea: to bring people and communities together through music, encourage discovery, and create a space where artists and audiences from different backgrounds can connect.
My goal is to introduce audiences to sounds and genres they might not ordinarily explore, while giving local artists the space to experiment, collaborate, and share sounds from their rooh (soul).
I believe live music can spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and open us up to new experiences.
Each edition of Sounds from Rooh creates a space that encourages musical exploration, supports local artists, and celebrates the diversity of sounds within Toronto's music scene.
Whether you're familiar with Indian classical music or discovering it for the first time, all you need to bring is an open mind and a curiosity for music.
