We’re kicking off the year with a classic, SoundRise Sunday at The Pier, this time with the Ta Dhom Project by Viveick Rajagopalan! ✨

🎤 Ta Dhom Project by Viveick Rajagopalan is a genre-bending rhythm and poetry project from India, known for creating a unique sound and carving out a new subtext within Indian hip hop. It features lyrics with deeper meaning, rhythms rooted in South Indian Carnatic percussion, and konnakol (a 5,000-year-old vocal percussion form).

What began as a social experiment has grown into a globally recognised sound, earning acclaim across platforms such as WOMEX, WOMAD, Shambala, and Oslo Mela, with performances featured on BBC Arts Hour. Their music found wider recognition through India 91 in the film Gully Boy. At its core, the primal nature of music is to bring people together beyond language, class, or caste barriers, and that is what Ta Dhom Project does best through rhythm and poetry. 🎶

Line-up: Viveick Rajagopalan (mridangam, konnakol, music composer and producer), MC Artslord (vocals, Tamil rapper and beatboxer), MC Khoj (vocals, Marathi and Hindi rapper), MC Dehaati (vocals, Bhojpuri rapper), Sayar Mitra (bass), Swarangi Savdekar (Puneri dhol), Yamini Khamkar (Puneri dhol), Sigmund Quadros (sound engineer).
