Sounding with Bats opens up a sonic universe where the pulsating echolocation calls of the resident bats at Floating inhabit a shared space with a synthesizer and a violin. An amplified heterodyne bat detector brings the bats’ signals to human hearing range and allows the musicians to interact with them.
Bats use ultrasound - very high frequency signals normally inaudible to humans - to orient themselves and hunt prey in the dark. Although they also have eyes, they’ve evolved a sophisticated sonar to “see” in low-light conditions that shield them from the eyes of predators.
The echolocation sound, a “carrier of meaning” for the bat, becomes a “carrier of meaning” for the musicians as well as the audience in the shared sonic situation.
