“Singing is one of the mega-mechanisms we use for bonding. When doing it communally, there’s something about the synchrony of singing that creates this massive endorphin uplift.”(Robin Dunbar, professor of evolutionary psychology, Oxford University.
It is extremely exciting to be hosting Damien Mahoney and Soul Sounds at the Yoga Cafe on the 1st of November. If you get a chance to see this before the tickets sell out, PLEASE book a ticket because I expect to be turning people away at the door. There's a bit of a culture of people showing up ad hoc, but i don't think that'll fly with this particular cookie. Its flavours are just too good.
Soul Sounds is a communal singing session led by Damien Mahoney - a unique combination of global songs, original material and some group improvisation practices. This is open to all levels of experience and is a grounded, somatic practice involving breath, body and voice.
There is now a wealth of scientific evidence to prove that people who are more engaged in singing have lower rates of depression and higher levels of wellbeing and life satisfaction than others. In a time when more people are increasingly feeling isolated and disconnected from each other, group singing can be a very accessible, creative and joyful way of bringing people together. For our ancestors, chants and songs would accompany every kind of activity. Individuals and communities expressed emotions through their songs – joy and celebration, grief and despair. Songs fulfilled a myriad of purposes both practical and profound.
Coming together as a community to reclaim this vital form of expression is a powerful way to loosen and release emotional blockages in the body. It can be particularly helpful for issues relating to communication, creativity and connection to others.
Facilitator Damien Mahoney is a Manchester-based musician and producer. He trained as a Natural Voice Facilitator with Frankie Armstrong and has also trained with Phoene Cave (The Musical Breath), Jenni Rodditi (Vocal Tai Chi) and Guillermo Rozenthuler (Circle Singing / Training For Vocal Leaders). In addition to running regular public group singing events, workshops and retreats, he has done sessions with prison inmates, social workers, healthcare staff, refugees, homeless charities and cancer patients.
Passionate about the myriad beneficial powers of sound, Damien regularly provides live music for therapeutic events including meditation, dance, breathwork and yoga sessions, retreats and ceremonies. This work includes the live improvisation trio, The Order Of Love. He also writes, produces and sings for the band Caulbearers.
He is the curator of Music As Medicine, a live music event aiming to bring communities together through music & dancing, drawing on world influences and encouraging collaboration and improvisation between artists.
"Soul Sounds is about each of us finding a way of connecting to our unique, authentic voices which can help us feel more alive, energised and expressive. My role is to help guide people through this process so we can connect with the healing power of our own and each other's sounds. There is no need to know musical theory, or be able to read music. The songs and sounds we share are learned by ear, in the oral tradition.” Damien Mahoney
